Head of Mission – Afghanistan

About the role

The Head of Mission for Afghanistan will serve as INSO’s senior representative in the country, providing strategic leadership and ensuring the organisation’s safety coordination platform operates effectively. Reporting to senior management, you will shape programme delivery, stakeholder engagement and compliance while working closely with the remote team based in Amman.

Key responsibilities

• Represent INSO at the country level, building and maintaining relationships with government agencies, NGOs, UN bodies, donors and security authorities.
• Monitor political, security and humanitarian developments and provide regular strategic analysis to senior leadership.
• Lead the remote Afghanistan programme, overseeing strategy, service delivery standards and compliance with internal and external regulations.
• Ensure timely delivery of core services, including incident tracking, analytical reporting and crisis‑management support.
• Foster a culture of accountability, quality and professionalism within the mission team.
• Contribute to organisational strategic development and help shape the direction of INSO’s global safety work.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in senior leadership or mission management within humanitarian or security contexts.
• Deep knowledge of Afghanistan’s political, security and humanitarian environment.
• Proven ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including governments, UN agencies and donor organisations.
• Strong track record of ensuring compliance with security policies, safeguarding standards and financial procedures.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills, with fluency in English.
