Deputy Program Director – Human Rights Research

About the role

Human Rights Watch is seeking a Deputy Program Director to help lead its global research programme. The role will support the Global Program Director and work with five regional and thematic research divisions, shaping strategy and ensuring high‑quality human‑rights research worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Manage divisional directors and staff across multiple continents, fostering inclusive and collaborative leadership.
• Oversee financial management and performance evaluation for the assigned research divisions.
• Develop and implement operational plans that align with HRW’s global strategy and set clear goals and benchmarks.
• Promote staff resilience, work‑life balance, and a positive work environment that advances diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Participate in the design of project‑level strategies and contribute to the overall direction of the Program Office.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a senior leader and people manager in an international, research‑focused organization.
• Deep knowledge of human‑rights issues, research methodologies and advocacy practices.
• Track record of implementing writing, research and ethical standards in line with best practices.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and staff well‑being.
