Air Operations Officer – UN Mission Support

About the role

The Air Operations Officer will be based in Amman, Jordan, within the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary‑General for Yemen. Reporting to the Chief of Mission Support, the incumbent will lead the UN aviation unit and ensure safe, efficient air operations that support the mission’s humanitarian and peace‑keeping objectives.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise all activities of the OSESGY Aviation Unit.
  • Ensure compliance with Air Tasking Orders (ATOs), UN aviation manuals, ICAO standards and host‑country regulations.
  • Review and approve Air Mission Requests, assigning the most suitable air assets.
  • Coordinate daily ATOs with Chief Planning, resolve conflicts and communicate orders to all stakeholders.
  • Oversee routine passenger/cargo flights, special missions (medevac, VIP) and military operational flights.
  • Lead integrated search‑and‑rescue operations for UN and external aircraft.
  • Arrange diplomatic clearances, ground handling, crew accommodation and transport.
  • Conduct aviation risk management and monitor asset utilization.
  • Liaise with UN units, NGOs, government agencies and intergovernmental bodies on aviation matters.
  • Develop SOPs, brief aircrews on policies and ensure reference documents are up‑to‑date.
  • Provide inputs for budget proposals and aircraft acquisition requirements.

Required profile

  • Extensive experience in aviation operations, preferably in a UN or humanitarian context.
  • Strong knowledge of UN aviation standards, ICAO regulations and Air Tasking Orders.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent analytical and coordination abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

Required skills

  • Knowledge of UN Aviation Manual, UN AVSTADS and UN Aviation Safety Manual.
  • Familiarity with ICAO standards and Aeronautical Information Publications.
  • Experience with Air Tasking Orders (ATOs) and Standard Operating Procedures.
