Assistant Architect Design

About the role

UNRWA, a UN agency supporting Palestine refugees, is hiring an Assistant Architect Design in its Architecture and Design Division, Programme Infrastructure and Camp Improvement Department, based at the Amman headquarters. The post develops preliminary designs and detailed architectural designs, including 3D sketch-up development, for projects such as schools, health centers, shelters, warehouses, administrative buildings, landscaping and rehousing projects, in line with Agency needs, policies, design criteria, standards and local and international codes.

Key responsibilities

• Support preliminary and detailed architectural design for building projects and maintain and apply standard architectural details using relevant software, reviewing drawings prepared by Technical Assistants/CAD.
• Contribute to tender documents, including specifications for special design needs, identify non-standard items and write descriptions for the Bill of Quantities.
• Search for new models, technologies and techniques, and incorporate green elements into designs to meet environmental needs.
• Carry out special designs for alterations to Agency premises, including building system inspections and remediation requirements.
• Liaise with construction and design teams on architectural issues during construction, and update drawings to reflect as-built conditions and ground conditions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• University degree in Architecture Engineering from an accredited institution.
• At least three years of relevant experience, including at least two years designing public buildings and developmental projects.
• Good command of written and spoken English and Arabic (UN Level II).
• Knowledge of greening approaches and protection needs, and a good understanding of the context of Palestine refugees and UNRWA operations are preferred.

Required skills

• Architectural design software and computer-aided design, such as AutoCAD.
• 3D sketch-up development.

What we offer

• Limited Duration Contract (Band E), 1 year, with possible extension depending on funds, performance and need.
• Monthly basic salary of JOD 897.
• Compulsory medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave (prorated for contracts under one year), family allowance (if applicable), 2 days of sick leave per month of service, maternity and paternity leave upon eligibility.
