Storage Logistics Officer – Prison Workshop

About the role

The Storage Logistics Officer will supervise and train prisoners in a specialist workshop at HMP Standford Hill, Sheerness. The role focuses on improving inmates' employment prospects by delivering high‑quality instruction, ensuring security, and supporting the achievement of nationally recognised qualifications.

Key responsibilities

• Select and induct prisoners into the workshop, covering health and safety, COSHH, and safe use of machinery and tools.
• Plan work schedules, set targets, and monitor quality standards to meet contractual obligations.
• Assess prisoners' skills against national qualification criteria and provide tailored support.
• Maintain discipline, motivation, and performance of workshop participants.
• Conduct security checks, including metal‑detector scans and rub‑down searches of attendees.
• Log attendance, approve hours worked, and record piece‑work wages.
• Carry out routine equipment checks, report faults, and perform planned maintenance on machinery.
• Complete required reports (ACCT, VRIR, SIR, IEP) and contribute to parole and sentence‑planning documentation.

Required profile

• Ability to work in a secure, correctional environment while maintaining high standards of safety and control.
• Strong communication skills for radio coordination and reporting.
• Capacity to motivate and develop prisoners, adapting training to individual needs.
• Attention to detail for record‑keeping, equipment checks, and incident reporting.

Required skills

• Forklift licence (desirable).
• Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including COSHH.
• Experience with machinery operation and maintenance.
• Competence in conducting security searches and using metal detectors.
