Engineering Assistant – WASH & Solid Waste Management

About the role

The Engineering Assistant will provide technical support to solid waste management activities within an integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and operational maintenance programme. Working closely with the Senior Engineering Officer, the role ensures infrastructure projects are implemented efficiently and in line with humanitarian principles.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in recruiting, deploying and assessing Syrian incentive‑based volunteer (IBV) staff.
• Supervise non‑Oxfam staff such as masons, plumbers, casual labourers and IBVs throughout project duration.
• Establish and maintain a daily site‑check and documentation framework.
• Conduct emergency needs assessments within a public‑health context.
• Identify and supervise technical resources to ensure quality work on schedule.
• Liaise with the Community Engagement team for planning and implementation.
• Report regularly to the Senior Engineering Officer.
• Develop management control systems through financial planning and cost analysis.
• Support design of quality‑control plans and oversee engineering drawings.
• Direct IBV teams in inspection and testing activities.
• Manage procurement of equipment and materials and enforce HSE standards.
• Provide technical oversight for contracted service providers and review contractor method statements.
• Maintain photographic and documentary records of site activities and log lessons learned.

Required profile

• Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
• Experience in Climate Justice, WASH operations, infrastructure maintenance and humanitarian settings.
• Basic knowledge of control systems, quality assurance and HSE standards.
• Fluent in spoken and written English and Arabic.
