Head Coach Martlet Hockey

About the role

The Head Coach of Martlet Hockey leads McGill University's women’s ice‑hockey program, overseeing all aspects of team performance, athlete development, and program growth. Reporting to the Director of Sport Programs, the coach works closely with university departments to enhance recruitment, academic support, alumni engagement, and community outreach.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a team of professional assistant coaches and technical specialists.
• Develop and execute recruitment and retention strategies for varsity student‑athletes who meet academic standards.
• Provide senior coaching services, delivering sport‑specific training, tactical instruction, and performance analysis.
• Guide the student‑athlete leadership group to foster an exceptional athletic experience.
• Design training programs, set performance objectives, and monitor short‑ and long‑term goals.
• Collaborate with fitness, sports‑science, medical, and nutrition professionals to optimize athlete health and performance.
• Engage with leagues, associations, CEGEPS, high schools, and sport organizations at provincial, national, and international levels.
• Partner with University Advancement on fundraising, alumni relations, and financial award initiatives.
• Act as spokesperson for the team in media interactions and public events.

Required profile

• Proven experience coaching high‑performance varsity athletes, preferably in women’s ice hockey.
• Strong understanding of recruitment processes and academic eligibility standards.
• Ability to lead and develop coaching staff and support personnel.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with students, alumni, and external partners.

Required skills

• Expertise in ice‑hockey coaching techniques, tactics, and player development.
• Knowledge of athlete performance monitoring and sports‑science integration.
