Legal Officer

About the role

The Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA) within the Office of Administration of Justice seeks a Legal Officer to provide independent legal support to United Nations staff members in Amman, Jordan. Reporting to the Chief of OSLA, the officer will assist clients throughout the internal justice system, including appeals and disciplinary matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal assistance to staff members under the UN Administration of Justice framework.
• Advise clients on appeals against administrative decisions and disciplinary actions.
• Represent and litigate before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal, preparing written and oral submissions.
• Identify cases suitable for informal resolution such as settlement or mediation and support clients in those processes.
• Conduct legal research, analyze jurisprudence, and draft or review legal documents and correspondence.
• Maintain electronic registers, legal precedent databases, and assist in preparing reports for the General Assembly and other bodies.
• Support administrative and budgetary requirements of the office and perform other duties as required.
