Senior Software Engineer (Backend Platform)

About the role

Wiley is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Amman engineering team. You will work on the backend platform that powers administrative applications for many of the world’s largest scientific publishers. The role involves extending a mature, multi‑tenant Java system and modernising parts of the stack while preserving existing customer behavior.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and related features.
• Modernise legacy modules onto a current frontend architecture.
• Own features end‑to‑end, from data model and API design to the user interface.
• Participate in architectural discussions, technical design reviews, and code reviews.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development, testing, and production environments.
• Improve software quality through automated testing, refactoring, and technical‑debt management.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and QA across multiple regions and time zones.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional Java development experience.
• Strong understanding of object‑oriented design, data structures, and design patterns.
• Hands‑on experience with the Spring framework and building RESTful APIs.
• Solid knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
• Experience writing unit and integration tests (e.g., JUnit, Mockito).
• Proficiency with Git and Linux‑based environments.
• Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team.
