Chair of Basic Sciences (Medical Education)

About the role

The Chair of Basic Sciences provides academic and operational leadership for the basic sciences component of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, covering Years 1‑3. Reporting to the Dean of Medicine, the role ensures the curriculum aligns with intended learning outcomes, accreditation standards, and the university’s educational strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead curriculum development, review, mapping, and enhancement for Years 1‑3 of the MD program.
• Promote horizontal and vertical integration of basic and clinical sciences, collaborating with the Vertical Modules Lead.
• Support innovative educational approaches such as simulation‑based, case‑based, team‑based, and technology‑enhanced learning.
• Oversee quality assurance and enhancement activities, including student and faculty feedback, program evaluation, and accreditation support.
• Monitor educational quality, generate reports for the Dean, and implement improvement initiatives.
• Coordinate assessment strategies and student progression monitoring within the basic sciences phase.

Required profile

• Proven academic leadership experience in medical education, preferably at the senior faculty level.
• Strong understanding of curriculum design, integration of basic and clinical sciences, and spiral learning concepts.
• Experience with accreditation processes, quality assurance, and continuous curriculum improvement.
• Ability to collaborate with senior academic leaders, faculty, students, and external partners.
