Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and implementation of building projects across its operational areas. Reporting to the Electro‑mechanical Design Lead Engineer, the incumbent will contribute to the creation of safe, cost‑effective, and environmentally‑responsible mechanical solutions for schools, hospitals, shelters, warehouses and other facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed mechanical designs for a variety of building projects in line with UNRWA policies, standards and local/international codes.
• Maintain and apply standard mechanical detail libraries using appropriate CAD software; review and improve drawings prepared by technical assistants.
• Prepare tender documentation, including specifications and Bill of Quantities, identifying non‑standard items and describing them accurately.
• Research emerging materials and technologies, integrating green and safety considerations into designs.
• Provide technical advice for alteration works, produce technical reports and inspection documentation.
• Liaise with construction teams to resolve design issues, update as‑built drawings and ensure design integrity throughout implementation.
• Coordinate with other designers to optimise mechanical solutions while preserving building soundness.

Required profile

• Proven experience in mechanical design for building projects such as schools, hospitals, shelters or warehouses.
• Familiarity with local and international mechanical codes of practice and UNRWA design criteria.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and construction personnel.

Required skills

• Proficiency with mechanical design/CAD software.
• Experience preparing tender documents and Bill of Quantities.
• Knowledge of emerging mechanical materials and green design principles.
• Strong technical reporting and documentation skills.
