Backend Java Software Engineer (Mid-Level)

About the role

Wiley is looking for a talented Backend Java Software Engineer to join its Search Team. You will design, build, and maintain high‑performance backend search systems that serve millions of users worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain core search platform components and backend services.
• Build scalable features that improve search relevance, performance, and reliability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development, testing, and production environments.
• Participate in architectural discussions, technical design reviews, and code reviews.
• Enhance software quality through automated testing, refactoring, and technical‑debt management.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across multiple regions and time zones.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Professional experience developing Java applications with strong OOP, data‑structure, and design‑pattern knowledge.
• Experience writing unit and integration tests (e.g., JUnit, Mockito).
• Proficiency with Git and Linux‑based environments.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with focus on quality and continuous improvement.
• Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team.
