Waste Management & Recycling Instructor – HM Prison Wymott

About the role

This non‑operational instructional position is based at HM Prison Wymott and focuses on overseeing waste management and recycling activities within the establishment. The role combines practical waste handling with training prisoners in environmental best practices.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, process and dispose of waste from all prison areas in line with legislative and environmental standards.
• Manage restricted waste, including shredding and bailing of confidential material.
• Liaise with external contractors for skip collection, oil removal and other waste services.
• Record waste weight, cost and revenue; maintain waste transfer notes and submit monthly recycling data to Headquarters.
• Deliver accredited training to prisoners, maintain training records and monitor progress against SMART targets.
• Apply the waste hierarchy, oversee disassembly, repair and refurbishment workshops, and manage waste permits with the Environment Agency.
• Provide advice to staff and senior management on improving waste practices and promote recycling throughout the prison.
• Support additional instructor duties such as workshop administration, prisoner induction, health & safety training and reporting.

Required profile

• Non‑operational instructional role with no line‑management responsibilities.
• Ability to work on‑site in a prison environment and liaise with contractors.
• Experience delivering training and maintaining accurate records.
• Knowledge of waste legislation, waste hierarchy and permit requirements.
