Environmental & Social Specialist (Design & Build)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Environmental & Social Specialist to lead the environmental and social management of a Design & Build water infrastructure project in Amman, Jordan. The role will ensure compliance with the World Bank Environmental & Social Framework, national legislation, and project‑specific commitments while supporting sustainable project delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Lead environmental and social management activities across the project lifecycle.
• Oversee implementation of Environmental & Social Management Plans (ESMPs) and related safeguards.
• Ensure compliance with World Bank ESF/ESS requirements, national laws, and employer standards.
• Conduct environmental and social screening, assessments, mitigation, and monitoring.
• Manage stakeholder and community engagement, including grievance mechanisms.
• Identify and mitigate risks affecting vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
• Coordinate reporting, compliance monitoring, and liaison with contractors, authorities, and funding institutions.
• Provide guidance to multidisciplinary teams and conduct site visits as needed.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years’ experience in environmental and social management for infrastructure projects.
• Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Social Science, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• Proven experience preparing and implementing ESIAs, ESMPs, and environmental/social safeguards.
• Strong knowledge of World Bank Environmental & Social Framework and national legislation.
• Experience in stakeholder engagement and managing risks to vulnerable groups.
