Principal Software Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a self‑driven Principal Software Engineer with strong Java expertise to join our Amman engineering team. The role focuses on backend development for our Content Management System, enabling authors worldwide to submit and manage research that fuels scientific discovery.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, design, development, and maintenance of core backend systems and features.
• Set technical direction and champion engineering best practices across the team.
• Deliver complex, high‑impact initiatives while remaining hands‑on.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with QA and cross‑functional teams to ensure high‑quality releases.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in development and production environments.
• Ensure scalability, maintainability, and reliability through strong design and code reviews.
• Participate in continuous‑improvement activities, including refactoring and technical‑debt management.
• Align technical solutions with business goals by partnering with global stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Typically 8+ years of professional software development experience, including 5+ years focused on Java.
• Proven ability to lead technical discussions and influence architectural decisions.
• Demonstrated capacity to prioritize work and deliver in a dynamic environment.

Required skills

• Java (object‑oriented design and software architecture).
• Spring Framework and Hibernate.
• Design and implementation of RESTful APIs and web services.
• Messaging systems such as JMS.
• Relational databases and SQL (experience with SQL Server is a plus).
• Version control with Git.
• Unit testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito).
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and cloud platforms (e.g., GCP) is advantageous.
• Experience working in Linux environments.
