Chief Environment Division – Senior Leadership Role

About the role

The Chief Environment Division will lead UNRWA’s environmental and WASH strategy across its operations, ensuring integration of sustainability and climate‑change considerations into all programmes. Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure and Camp Improvement, this senior position supervises professional and contract staff and shapes agency‑wide policies.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate divisional operations, activities and financial planning for environment and WASH.
• Develop, update and monitor agency‑wide environment and WASH policies, strategies and frameworks.
• Provide guidance to other programmes (Health, Education, Relief, Social Services) to align with environmental policies.
• Produce manuals, guidelines and tools, including the ICIP Environmental and Social Management Framework.
• Design and implement innovative proposals for environmental sustainability and climate‑change challenges.
• Foster partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders to promote renewable resources and environmental measures.
• Review and approve the Solid Waste Management framework for headquarters and field operations, adapting strategies to local constraints.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in environmental management, WASH, and sustainable development within humanitarian or large‑scale UN contexts.
• Proven leadership and supervisory experience of multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong ability to develop policies, strategies and operational frameworks.
• Excellent coordination skills with senior staff and external partners.
