Community Engagement Officer (Maternity Cover)

About the role

The Community Engagement Officer will provide maternity cover for the existing officer, leading community engagement activities that promote solid waste management and recycling in Azraq and Zaatari refugee camps. The role focuses on building awareness, encouraging behavioural change, and linking the community with Oxfam’s SWM/Climate Justice programme.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee field activities, managing Community Engagement Assistants and paid volunteers.
• Conduct stakeholder analysis with community leaders, religious figures, teachers, women’s groups, youth leaders, health workers and NGOs.
• Develop community maps, profiles and engagement plans.
• Assess current waste management and recycling practices and advise on adjustments.
• Identify capacity gaps among volunteers and design training materials.
• Design and pilot communication materials targeting different audience groups.
• Organise clean‑up campaigns, awareness sessions, community meetings and the formation of environmental committees.
• Coordinate closely with the Community Engagement Manager and other project teams to ensure targets are met.

Required profile

• Experience in community engagement, preferably in humanitarian or refugee‑camp settings.
• Knowledge of solid waste management, recycling and environmental health issues.
• Proven ability to manage volunteers and facilitate capacity‑building activities.
• Strong interpersonal skills for building trust with diverse community stakeholders.
• Flexibility to work in challenging field environments.
