About the role
The Infrastructure Specialist will own the design, implementation, and ongoing management of our Unix/Linux server estate. You will ensure systems are secure, highly available, and aligned with business continuity requirements across on‑premise data centres and cloud environments.
Key responsibilities
- Build, provision and maintain Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu) and AIX servers, integrating them with domain/LDAP and applying CIS hardening.
- Execute patch cycles (yum/dnf for Linux, SUMA/NIM for AIX), validate services post‑patch and document compliance evidence.
- Monitor OS and VM health, tune thresholds, and reduce alert noise using syslog, journal, errpt and performance counters.
- Troubleshoot identity integration (SSSD, PAM, Kerberos), SSH key management and name resolution issues.
- Manage TLS/certificate bindings, enforce least‑privilege access and secure service accounts.
- Administer the primary backup solution, run restore tests and support disaster‑recovery exercises.
- Track end‑of‑life OS/hardware, plan upgrades and coordinate migrations with stakeholders.
- Lead incident response, root‑cause analysis and produce post‑incident reports.
- Maintain VMware vSphere/ESXi and IBM PowerVM/LPAR virtualization layers, as well as Unix HA clusters (HACMP/PowerHA, Pacemaker/Corosync).
- Collaborate with application, network, storage and cloud teams to support service integrations.
- Keep runbooks, diagrams and CMDB data up to date; provide weekly KPI reports.
- Manage vendor relationships and oversee secure decommissioning of legacy hardware.
- Mentor engineers, manage workload, prioritize Jira tickets and organise on‑call rota.
Required profile
- Strong background in Unix/Linux system administration (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, AIX).
- Proven experience with patch management, security hardening and compliance reporting.
- Hands‑on experience with virtualization (VMware, PowerVM) and HA clustering technologies.
- Ability to lead incident response, conduct root‑cause analysis and mentor junior staff.
