Driver for Internal and External Candidates

About the role

UNRWA, a United Nations agency providing assistance and protection to Palestine refugees, is recruiting a driver in Amman, Jordan. The incumbent drives Agency vehicles for internal and external candidates, reports to the Vehicle Control Officer and is assigned to a Dispatcher in the Fields or the Special Assistant to the Commissioner-General. The role covers a range of vehicle types, including VIP transport, garbage collection, freight and buses.

Key responsibilities

• Drive assigned Agency vehicles safely, within traffic laws and the limits of the licence held, and load/unload the vehicle and secure equipment and luggage.
• Keep driving licence, passport, visas and travel documents valid, report traffic violations, and keep vehicle documents, serial numbers, registration and mileage up to date.
• Oversee daily vehicle checks (oil, battery, brakes, water, tyres), keep the vehicle clean and report problems to the supervisor.
• Follow accident rules and procedures, know emergency and roadside service numbers, and protect diplomatic pouch confidentiality while crossing borders.
• Check that passengers hold valid travel documents (UNLP, visa) before trips and assist them on and off the vehicle.
• When driving a senior official (VIP), follow protocol, act as part of the close protection team, provide first aid if needed and keep the vehicle free of loose items.
• When driving a compactor/garbage vehicle, load and offload refuse safely in congested areas and manage the crew's safety.
• When driving a freight vehicle, supervise loading and offloading, sheet, stow and secure the load against dust, heat, cold and water, and manage the labour and logistics teams.
• When driving a bus, plan routes and long-distance stops and look after passenger safety and welfare.
• Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

• Completion of basic education (third preparatory).
• At least five years' experience driving different types of vehicles.
• Valid driving licence for all types of vehicles.
• Ability to communicate in English and fluency in Arabic.
• Currently residing in the duty station (Amman).

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance, inspection and fault reporting.
• Knowledge of the Agency's rules and regulations is desirable.
• Knowledge of other UN languages, prior UN experience and understanding of the context of Palestine refugees and UNRWA operations are desirable.
