Biomedical Engineering Director

About the role

The Biomedical Engineering Director leads the department to ensure safe, reliable, and cost‑effective management of medical equipment across the organization. This senior position oversees all aspects of equipment lifecycle, budget, and team performance.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage overall operations of the Biomedical Engineering Department, ensuring timely and safe delivery of services.
• Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and standards for medical equipment management.
• Oversee the full equipment lifecycle from needs assessment to decommissioning.
• Establish preventive and corrective maintenance programs based on criticality and risk.
• Maintain accurate asset management records, including inventory, warranties, and calibration data.
• Monitor performance using KPIs such as equipment downtime and repair response times.
• Develop and manage departmental budget and long‑term capital plan.
• Provide technical advice on equipment selection, utilization, and replacement.
• Lead procurement activities, including specification development and supplier evaluation.
• Manage contracts with manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers.
• Ensure testing, calibration, commissioning, and handover of equipment.
• Oversee equipment safety, incidents, recalls, and regulatory compliance.
• Lead engineering activities for hospital projects, expansions, and new services.
• Supervise, develop, and evaluate the Biomedical Engineering team.
• Drive continuous improvement to optimize utilization and reduce downtime.

Required profile

• BSc in Biomedical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of biomedical engineering experience, preferably in a similar institution.
• At least 3 years in a senior leadership or managerial role.
• Strategic thinking, analytical judgment, and business acumen.
• Strong leadership, people management, and talent development skills.
• Excellent collaboration, stakeholder management, and communication abilities.

Required skills
